Lessons

From Zero To Guitar Hero In 10 Weeks

Weeks 1-2

Understand the Basics, Open Chords, and Your First Songs

In the first few weeks of our program, we'll start from ground zero. We'll focus on understanding the basics of the guitar, including how to tune, the names of the notes and strings, and proper posture for holding and playing the guitar. We'll dive into essential technique, with a heavy emphasis on learning open chords which will enable us to begin learning songs immediately. We'll focus on learning a few popular songs to put these fundamentals into practice.

Weeks 3-4

Strumming Patterns, Simple Scales, and More Popular Songs

In weeks three to four of our program, we’ll expand our library of strumming patterns . These strumming patterns will be simple yet versatile, allowing you to play through a wider range of your favorite songs. We’ll discuss the fundamental rhythm principles that will set you on the right path for long-term growth. To complement this, we'll introduce some simple scales, including major scales and pentatonic scales, allowing you to play more melodic and “lead” guitar vocabulary. We'll continue to learn popular songs to ensure you're always applying what you've learned week-to-week.

Weeks 5-6

Rhythm and Timekeeping, Open Position Scales, and Power Chords

In weeks five to six, we’ll delve deeper into rhythm and how to develop a solid base for playing in time. This skill, alongside your ability to now make chord changes in time, will allow you to begin playing along to your favorite songs and with other people as well. Separately, we will add some new scale shapes in open position so we can access the brighter, twangier sounds of bluegrass, country, and rock records, plus layer in some power chord technique for when you really want to rock.

Weeks 7-8

Fingerstyle, Barre Chords, and Some More Challenging Songs

In weeks seven and eight, we’ll shift our focus to the picking hand, diving into fingerstyle technique. We’ll explore this through both classical guitar repertoire as well as some modern songs that heavily feature fingerstyle. These are pivotal weeks, as we also introduce barre chords, a significant addition to your chord toolbox. With barre chords, you’ll unlock the ability to play in any key, just like your favorite songwriters. Incorporating these techniques will allow us to tackle more challenging and rewarding songs, expanding both your versatility and confidence.

Weeks 9-10

Lead Guitar Licks, Articulation Techniques, and How to Jam Over Songs with Others

In the last two weeks of our beginner bootcamp, we’ll dive into foundational lead guitar techniques, focusing on licks that you can immediately incorporate into your solos. We’ll explore essential articulation methods, including hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends, slides, and vibrato, using examples from iconic songs to see how great guitarists use these techniques. Additionally, we’ll cover how to jam with other musicians and understand the guitarist's role in a band, whether playing rhythm or lead. By the end, you’ll have all the tools you need to play along confidently with your favorite songs and with other musicians as well!

Frequently asked questions

FAQs

How often do I need to practice to see results?

Ideally, you should practice every day, as consistency leads to the greatest results. We recommend a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes of practice as a baseline. If possible, adding an additional 20 to 30 minutes would be phenomenal at this stage of your development. But, once more, the most important detail is practicing every day!

Can I progress at my own pace?

Of course! Our program takes the average student roughly 10 weeks to work through, but you can absolutely progress at whatever pace feels appropriate for you. The recorded lessons are ready for you to move through as quickly or as slowly as feels appropriate for your development. The key is that our curriculum provides the highest value content every step of the way, and each exercise builds logically from one to the next. You’ll receive precisely the materials you need at the right intervals, regardless of your pace.

How do I get feedback on my progress?

There are two methods for receiving video feedback in our program. First, any day of the week, you can submit videos of your work through our platform and one of our mentors will respond with personalized feedback tailored to your needs. The second feedback method occurs during our live classes, which we run weekly; here, a mentor will be present in real time to hear you play and provide focused guidance.

Am I too old to start learning guitar?

Absolutely not! Anyone can begin learning guitar at any age, provided they are prepared to dedicate the time and energy to the journey. We’ve worked with students of all ages, from 10-year-olds to people in their 70s and 80s, and we’ve seen excellent results across the board. The common thread among successful learners, regardless of age, is enthusiasm and consistency in their efforts.

How long do I have access to the course materials?

We’re very pleased to say that access to our materials is for life. You can return anytime to refine your skills using the program’s resources as often as you’d like.
